The FarPost - Issue 04

We are getting late into the soccer season, with some wins and some losses. We have watched young players demonstrate a new move and advanced players elevate their level of play on the field. We have created new relationships with the families who sit next to us each Saturday morning to cheer on our children. This is a perfect time to ask our children how they are feeling about soccer: asking them what they have learned, inquiring about their favorite soccer activities, and finding out what they are learning from their coaches.

The Power of Coaches

A parent whom I was trying to encourage to volunteer to coach told me he would never consider coaching a youth team. The reason was simple: he did not want to be the one to influence players’ decisions to stop playing a sport. This parent was very concerned with how coaches can negatively impact a team, which led me to think about all of the positive influences coaches can trigger in youth sport.

Celebrate our LSRHS Soccer Teams

Both the boys' and girls' varsity soccer teams have had magical seasons. Our teams both captured their Dual County League Large School championships. The girls' dominated the regular season collecting 15 wins against only 1 loss. Their MIAA playoff run came to an end during a hard fought game with Chemlsford. After 100 minutes of soccer, not a goal had been scored. Penalty kicks were not kind to the girls' as they lost 3-1 to close their season. The boys' team was undefeated with 14 wins and 2 ties. Their playoff run continues after surviving in overtime against a very motivated Westford Academy. The boys have a third round MIAA playoff game Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 aginst Medford at LSRHS. These kids play hard and deserve your support. Both squads should be celebrated for great seasons.

Sudbury Soccer helps South End Soccer through the US Soccer Federation’s PASSBACK program

The most important part of a drive to collect equipment is the donations. Thanks go out to our SYSA families who took the time to collect and made the effort to donate their gear. Over 100 pairs of cleats and shin guards were collected, not to mention balls, jerseys and loads of goalie gear. The drive was run by members of the LSRHS girls’ soccer, and field hockey teams including Madison Gullotti, Elise Hinkle, Erin Durning, Katie Rosseel, Whitney Ball, Vickie Coronado, Haley Colpitts and Ellie Hardwick. Appreciation also goes out to Brine’s Sporting Goods for their donation as well as being a collection site.

Calling all Volunteers

SYSA volunteers are extraordinary individuals who selflessly give of their time so the youth in our community can play soccer. In advance of the 2012 Coaches Meeting this Spring we are seeking volunteers to serve on the SYSA Board and in other areas of the club.

Following is a list of positions we are seeking to fill for the upcoming election including a brief description of the responsibilities of each Board position.

• Equipment co-chair works with the existing equipment manager to ensure that all SYSA coaches and players have the gear they need for their season. Position also includes leasing with Brines on gear selection and ordering
• Boston Breaker’s Ambassador coordinates activities between SYSA and the Boston Breakers. Responsibilities include scheduling player visits, organizing group nights at the games and others.
• New England Revolution’s Ambassador coordinates activities between SYSA and NE Revs. Similar to the Breaker’s role, responsibilities include scheduling player visits, organizing group nights at the games and promoting other NE Revolution events to our families.

Other non-Board volunteer opportunities include Age Group Coordinators, Head Coaches, and Assistant Coaches.
